Level thresholds: the foundation of accessibility
A level, threshold-free entry is the single most important feature of a genuinely accessible shower, since it removes the trip hazard and step that a wheelchair, walking frame, or simply wet unsteady feet can struggle with. This almost always means a wet room style approach, with the floor tanked and gently falling to a linear or point drain rather than relying on a shower tray with any kind of lip.
Where a full wet room isn't practical, a very low-profile or flush-fitted tray, sometimes recessed slightly into the floor, can achieve a near-level threshold, though a true wet room remains the most robust and future-proof solution.
Seating options
A fixed fold-down seat fitted securely to a tiled wall is the most common and durable option, taking weight safely without relying on suction or removable fittings that can fail over time. Fold-down seats are also useful day to day for anyone shaving legs, and they tuck away neatly when not needed.
Freestanding shower stools are a lower-cost alternative but need to be genuinely stable and non-slip, and they're better suited to a temporary need than a long-term accessible bathroom. Wherever a seat is fitted, the wall behind it needs proper reinforcement before tiling, which is something we plan for at the outset rather than retrofitting later.
Grab rails done properly
The single biggest mistake with grab rails is fitting them into a stud wall or tile without solid backing, which means they can work loose exactly when someone puts real weight on them. Rails need to be fixed into solid blocking behind the wall surface, planned before tiling begins, not added afterwards with generic wall plugs.
Positioning matters too: a rail beside the entry point helps with stepping in and out, while a horizontal or angled rail within the shower itself gives something to hold while washing or turning. We plan rail positions during the design visit based on how the room will actually be used, not as a generic afterthought.
Thermostatic controls for safety
A thermostatic shower valve maintains a constant, pre-set water temperature even if pressure elsewhere in the house changes, such as a toilet flushing or a tap running, which prevents sudden scalding or cold shocks. This matters for anyone with reduced sensation, reduced mobility to move away from water quickly, or simply anyone who wants a more predictable, comfortable shower.
Controls should be positioned within easy reach of the entry point, ideally with large, clearly marked dials or lever controls rather than small twist knobs, so they're easy to operate for anyone with limited grip or dexterity.
Planning for later life without a clinical look
Accessible design has moved well beyond the institutional look of decades past. Level-access wet rooms, discreet fold-down seats in matching tile finishes, and slim, well-positioned grab rails available in brushed or matte finishes can all sit comfortably within a genuinely stylish bathroom. Many of these features are also simply sensible for any household, since a level floor and a stable seat benefit anyone after an injury, during pregnancy, or simply as they get older.
