Bathroom alterations without starting again

Plenty of bathrooms do not need ripping out. The tiles are sound, the layout works, but one thing is wrong: a bath nobody uses, a basin in the wrong corner, a wall of dated tiles or a toilet that has seen better days. An alteration changes that one thing properly and leaves the rest alone, which usually means a smaller bill and fewer days without a bathroom.

Alterations we are asked for most

  • Taking out a bath and fitting a shower in its place
  • Replacing a tired shower enclosure with a walk-in screen
  • Swapping a basin for a vanity unit with storage
  • Changing a toilet, including concealed cistern units where the wall allows
  • Retiling a single wall or the floor only
  • Replacing taps, valves and shower controls
  • Adding grab rails or a seat for easier use
  • Renewing all the sealant and grout in one visit

What keeps an alteration affordable

The biggest single saving on any bathroom job is leaving the pipework where it is. A new basin or toilet on the same spot is a straightforward swap. Moving a toilet means moving the soil pipe connection, and that is where cost and time climb quickly, typically adding one to three days on its own.

The second thing to think about is what sits next to the change. Taking a bath out often exposes a strip of wall that was never tiled, or tiles that do not match anything still available. We look at that during the visit so the quote covers the patch that will show, not just the item you asked about.

When a full refit is the better call

Sometimes an alteration is the wrong answer and we will say so. If the floor is soft, the tiles are drummy across the room or the waterproofing behind the shower has already failed, changing one fitting means working around problems that will cost you again within a year or two.

In that case we will price both options side by side so you can see what the difference really is. You can read more about how a complete job runs on our bathroom installation page before deciding.

How it is priced and booked

  1. 1

    Send photos and a list

Tell us what you want to change and send a few photos of the room, including the floor and the pipes where you can.

  2. 2

    We visit and measure

We check what is behind the change, whether the pipes can stay put and what will need making good.

  3. 3

    A fixed written quote

Every alteration is priced individually. Small jobs are booked as a half-day or full-day slot; bigger ones get a start date and a day count.

  4. 4

The work, then the tidy up

We protect the rest of the room, do the change, make good and leave it clean and usable.
