Plumbing and tiling from one team

Most bathroom jobs need a plumber and a tiler, and the trouble usually starts in the gap between them. The pipes go in before anyone has checked the tile layout, or the tiler arrives to find a valve sitting ten millimetres proud of where the finished wall will be. We do both, so the pipework is set out for the tiles and the tiles are laid knowing exactly where the pipes run.

Why it matters who does both

Shower valves, bath wastes and wall-hung toilets all have to finish at a precise depth once the tiles and adhesive are on. When one person sets the pipe and someone else sets the tile, small errors add up to a valve that sits too deep or a trim plate that will not cover the hole.

Waterproofing is the other shared job. Tanking has to go on after the pipes are in and tested but before a single tile goes up, and the joints around every pipe need sealing properly. With one team responsible, there is no argument afterwards about whose fault a leak was.

The plumbing side

  • New and altered supply and waste pipework
  • Shower valves and bath fillers set to finished wall depth
  • Tap changes and isolation valves
  • Toilets, basins and baths connected and tested
  • Leak repairs found and put right
  • Pressure tested before anything is covered up

The tiling side

  • Wall and floor tiling in bathrooms and shower areas
  • Tanking and waterproofing behind wet areas
  • Tile layout planned around valves and niches
  • Clean cuts around pipes and fittings
  • Grouting and sealing to finish
  • Regrouting and resealing on existing tiles

How a combined job runs

  1. 1

    Survey the room

We look at where the pipes run now, what the walls and floor are made of and where the tiles will start and stop.

  2. 2

    First fix plumbing

Pipework is moved or added and tested while the walls are still open.

  3. 3

    Waterproof, then tile

Wet areas are tanked, then tiles go on with the layout already worked out around the fittings.

  4. 4

    Second fix and seal

Taps, valves, toilet and basin are connected, everything is tested again and the joints are sealed.
