Plumber vs bathroom fitter

Plumber vs bathroom fitter: which do you need?

You need a plumber for faults and changes to pipework, such as leaks, taps, toilets and moving a supply; you need a bathroom fitter when the job also involves stripping out, preparing walls and floors, tiling and fitting a new suite. For a full new bathroom, a fitter who does their own plumbing and tiling keeps the whole job under one team, which is how we work.

What a plumber typically does

A plumber works on the water supply and waste: repairing leaks, replacing taps and valves, fixing toilets, running new pipework and connecting appliances and fittings. For a one-off repair, or swapping a basin or toilet like for like, a plumber is usually all you need.

Many plumbers do not tile, board walls or waterproof shower areas, so on a bigger job they would be one trade among several.

What a bathroom fitter typically does

A bathroom fitter manages the whole room: survey and layout, strip-out, plumbing, preparing walls and floors, waterproofing wet areas, tiling and fitting the suite. Some fitters subcontract the plumbing or tiling; others, like us, do both in-house.

The difference shows in the details that sit between trades. Who makes sure the floor is stiff enough for the tiles, the tray has a proper fall, and the wall is prepared for a wall-hung toilet? With one team, the answer is always the same people.

Which one for your job?

  • Dripping tap or running toilet: a plumber
  • Leak under a basin or bath: a plumber
  • Replacing a toilet or basin like for like: a plumber
  • Resealing and regrouting: either, often a maintenance visit
  • Swapping a bath for a shower: a bathroom fitter
  • A complete new bathroom or en-suite: a bathroom fitter

Why one team can be simpler

Coordinating separate trades means separate quotes, separate diaries and gaps between visits. It also leaves room for disagreement about whose job a problem is. When the same team plumbs, tiles and fits, the sequence is planned once and responsibility is clear.

We cover both sides: plumbing repairs and maintenance, and complete bathroom design and installation, Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, with free written quotes.

How to compare quotes from different trades

When you have quotes from a plumber and a bathroom fitter for the same job, check that they cover the same scope. One may include strip-out, making good, waterproofing and tiling while another assumes someone else will do them. A lower figure that leaves out preparation can end up costing more once the missing stages are added.

Look at who is responsible for each step and what happens if a problem shows up between them. Ask whether wall and floor preparation is included, who supplies adhesives, grout and sealant, and who removes the old suite. Clear written answers make it much easier to compare like with like and choose the right trade for your job.
