New bathroom guide

Getting a new bathroom: what to expect

Getting a new bathroom follows a clear sequence: a survey and quote, then strip-out, pipework, preparation, tiling, fitting and a final handover. The bathroom is out of use for most of the fitting period, so the most useful preparation is planning for another toilet and washing arrangement and clearing the room and access route before day one.

Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. Quotes are free and without obligation, and we aim to reply within 24 hours.

Before the work starts

The survey is where the job is really shaped. We measure, look at where the supply and waste pipes run, check walls and floors and talk through what you want. Bring any pictures you like; they help pin down the look faster than descriptions.

Your written quote should tell you what is included, what products are assumed and how anything unexpected at strip-out will be handled. Order times for some products can be long, so choosing the suite and tiles early helps the start date.

Preparing your home

  • Plan where you will wash and use a toilet while the room is out of use
  • Clear the bathroom completely, including cabinets and towel rails
  • Clear the landing and stairs so old fittings can come out safely
  • Move anything fragile from shelves near the bathroom
  • Agree where materials and waste will be kept
  • Tell us about pets, parking and any access issues

During the installation

Day one is usually the noisiest: the old suite, tiles and boxing come out and the room is taken back to bare walls and floor. First-fix plumbing follows, setting pipes and wastes where the new layout needs them. Walls and floors are then prepared, and wet areas waterproofed before any tile goes on.

Tiling comes next, then second-fix: the toilet, basin, bath or shower, taps and screen are fitted and connected. The water may be off for short periods during the work; we tell you in advance. We work Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.

Handover and after

  1. 1

    Testing

Every connection is checked for leaks and every fitting for proper function.

  2. 2

    Sealing and cleaning

Silicone is applied, the room is cleaned and the rubbish removed.

  3. 3

    Walk-through

We show you how everything works, including isolation valves for future repairs.

  4. 4

    Curing time

Fresh sealant needs time to cure before heavy use; we tell you how long to leave it.

Choosing products without delaying the start

It helps to settle the main items before the start date: the toilet, basin and vanity, the bath or shower tray, the shower valve and screen, and the tiles. Some items, especially larger shower screens and made-to-order units, can take a while to arrive, and a missing part can hold up the fitting sequence.

Order a few extra tiles beyond the measured area to allow for cuts and breakages, and keep any spares from the same batch after the job in case a tile ever needs replacing. If you are unsure about sizes or compatibility, check with us before ordering, because a valve or tray chosen early affects how the pipework is set out.
