Minimum practical dimensions
There's no single legal minimum size for an en suite, but there are practical minimums below which a room becomes genuinely awkward to use every day. As a rough guide, a shower-only en suite with a WC and basin can work in a space as small as around 1.5 metres by 1.8 metres, but this is tight and leaves very little room for movement or storage. A more comfortable version of the same layout is closer to 1.8 metres by 2.2 metres.
Shower enclosure size matters more than overall room size in terms of daily comfort. An 800mm by 800mm shower is workable, but 900mm by 900mm or a rectangular 900mm by 1200mm tray gives noticeably more comfortable everyday use, particularly for taller household members. Squeezing a smaller shower in to save space in the wider room is rarely worth the daily inconvenience.
We always recommend getting an actual measured survey before deciding what will fit, since minimum figures like these are only a starting guide. Door swing, pipework routes and where the bedroom door and wardrobes sit can all reduce the workable space further than the raw room dimensions suggest.
Drainage and waste runs
The biggest practical constraint on an en suite location within a bedroom is usually how easily waste pipework can get from the new bathroom to the existing soil stack. A WC needs a reasonably direct run to the soil stack, ideally with adequate fall, and the further away the en suite is from existing plumbing, the more work (and sometimes the more visible boxing in) is needed to route pipework properly.
Showers and basins are a little more flexible than WCs since their waste pipes are smaller, but they still need a sensible route to a drain or stack, generally through a floor void or down through the ceiling below if the layout allows. In upstairs en suites this usually means routing pipework through the floor joists down to a stack on the ground floor, which is straightforward in most standard timber floor constructions but worth checking early if the property has a concrete floor deck.
We'll always assess the existing pipework and stack position as one of the first things we look at when planning an en suite, since it genuinely shapes where the WC, shower and basin can sensibly go, sometimes more than the aesthetic layout you might have originally pictured.
Door swing and access
Because en suites are so often built into a corner of an existing bedroom, door swing needs careful thought both for the en suite door itself and how it interacts with bedroom furniture. A door that swings fully into the en suite can clash with a WC or basin positioned just inside, while a door that swings out into the bedroom needs enough clear space on that side too, particularly if a bed or wardrobe sits nearby.
Sliding or pocket doors solve this neatly in tight en suites, removing the swing arc entirely, though a pocket door needs a stud wall thick enough to house the door when open, which isn't always possible if the wall is masonry or load-bearing.
It's also worth thinking about noise and privacy at the door itself. A gap under the door, needed for ventilation and to allow the extractor fan to draw air properly, will let some sound and light through, so positioning the en suite door away from a direct sightline to the bed, where the layout allows, is a small detail that makes a noticeable difference to comfort.
Ventilation in a small enclosed room
En suites are usually the most enclosed bathroom in a house, often with no external window at all, which makes mechanical ventilation essential rather than optional. Building regulations require adequate ventilation in any new bathroom, and in a windowless en suite this means a mechanical extractor fan ducted to the outside, run either on a timer, a humidity sensor, or linked to the light switch with an overrun timer so it continues running briefly after the light is switched off.
Ducting an extractor fan out from an internal en suite can be one of the more involved parts of the installation, particularly on an upper floor, since the ducting needs a sensible route through the loft space or an external wall. This is worth planning early, since retrofitting ducting after walls and ceilings are finished is far more disruptive than allowing for it from the start.
A well-specified extractor fan also helps protect the rest of the bedroom from condensation and damp, since moisture from an unventilated en suite can migrate into the adjoining room over time, affecting decoration and, in the worst cases, the building fabric.
Soundproofing between the en suite and bedroom
Because an en suite shares a wall (and sometimes no wall at all beyond a stud partition) directly with the bedroom it serves, and often with a neighbouring bedroom too, sound transmission is worth thinking about at the design stage rather than after the room is finished. Standard plasterboard stud walls transmit plumbing noise, extractor fan noise and general bathroom sounds fairly readily.
Acoustic insulation within a stud wall cavity, combined with resilient bars or acoustic plasterboard, can meaningfully reduce noise transfer for a modest additional cost, and is worth considering particularly where the en suite serves a bedroom used by someone with different sleeping hours to the rest of the household, or where a neighbouring bedroom is on the other side of the same wall.
Pipe noise is also worth a mention, since a badly clipped or unlagged waste pipe running through a stud wall can transmit a surprising amount of noise when the shower or WC is used. Proper pipe clipping and, where needed, some simple lagging or acoustic wrap around waste pipes reduces this at very little extra cost during the build.
Storage and lighting in a compact room
Storage in an en suite needs to work harder per square metre than in a family bathroom, since there's usually less of it to go round. A tall, narrow wall cabinet, a mirrored cabinet doubling as storage, or a recessed shower niche all help keep the limited floor space clear while still giving somewhere for towels, toiletries and everyday items.
Lighting in a small, often windowless room benefits from a layered approach even more than in a larger bathroom, since there's no natural light to fall back on at all. A good general ceiling light combined with focused light at the mirror avoids the flat, slightly gloomy feel that a single central light can create in a small enclosed space.
Heated towel rails are worth including in most en suites both for practicality and because they double as a way to dry towels quickly in a room with limited ventilation and no window, which helps reduce the overall moisture load in the room between uses.
