Timber suspended floors: the most common Gloucestershire scenario
A great many bathrooms in Gloucester, Cheltenham and Stroud terraces, along with older cottages across the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley, sit on suspended timber joists rather than solid concrete. Timber floors are entirely capable of taking a wet room, but they need more careful preparation, because timber flexes slightly under load in a way concrete doesn't, and any flex under a tiled, tanked floor risks cracking grout or, worse, the membrane itself.
The usual solution is a deck former, a pre-formed board system that sits across the joists and is engineered to create the correct fall to the drain while spreading load evenly, avoiding the need to notch joists excessively to create a gradient by hand. This is generally the more reliable approach on timber floors than trying to taper conventional boarding.
Solid concrete floors: generally simpler, but not always
A solid concrete ground floor slab is usually the easier starting point for a wet room, since it doesn't flex and can often be cut back locally to recess the drain and create fall using a screed. This is common in many post-war semis and newer builds around Gloucestershire's newer estates.
The main constraint on concrete is depth available for the drain trap and fall, since there's no void beneath to drop into, unlike a timber floor with joists below. On a solid floor, achieving a gravity-fed drain sometimes isn't possible without breaking out a section of the slab, which is more disruptive and needs proper assessment before it's costed.
Joist notching and why it needs to be done carefully
Where joists do need to be cut into to accommodate a drain or pipework, there are limits to how much material can be removed without weakening the joist, generally governed by building regulations guidance on notch depth and position relative to span. Cutting too deep, or too close to a joist's midspan where bending stress is highest, can lead to sagging or even structural failure over time.
This is one of the reasons wet room floor work on a timber structure should be treated as a proper structural task, not simply a plumbing job with some sawing involved. Getting a second opinion, or a structural engineer's input on anything beyond routine notching, is sensible on older properties with less standardised joist sizes, common in listed and period Cotswold stone buildings.
Ceiling height below and how much depth you actually have
The room below your proposed wet room, whether that's a hallway, a room downstairs, or a garage, determines how much you can drop the floor without the ceiling below coming down noticeably or headroom becoming a problem. A deck former system typically needs somewhere in the region of 100-150mm of overall depth to achieve fall and house the drain trap, though this varies by product and drain type.
Where the void beneath is very shallow, low-profile or reduced-depth drain and former systems exist, but they narrow your options on drain type and sometimes push towards a pumped solution instead. This is precisely the kind of detail that needs checking on site, since it can't reliably be judged from a floor plan alone.
Deflection and why a bouncy floor needs addressing first
If a timber floor already feels bouncy or springy underfoot before any work starts, that deflection needs addressing, sometimes with additional noggins, strengthening or in some cases sistering extra joists alongside existing ones, before a wet room is tiled on top. Tiling directly onto a floor with excessive deflection is one of the most common causes of cracked grout lines and, eventually, failed waterproofing.
A proper wet room installer will flag this at survey stage rather than after tiling has started, since strengthening work afterwards means undoing finished floor work.
What a survey should tell you before you commit
A proper home visit and survey should identify floor construction (timber or concrete), joist direction and span if timber, ceiling height and access below, existing waste pipe routes, and any signs of existing deflection or damp. This information decides whether a straightforward deck former solution will work or whether more significant floor preparation is needed, and it should be reflected honestly in your written quote.
Being upfront about floor structure at quote stage, rather than discovering complications once work has started, is one of the main reasons costs can vary between one wet room job and another that looks identical on the surface.
