Vanity unit or pedestal basin: storage against space
At a glance
- A vanity unit removes the need for a bathroom cabinet elsewhere, which matters where wall space is already committed to a mirror or shaver socket.
- A pedestal basin sits proud of the wall by only a small amount, useful in a very narrow cloakroom where every 100mm counts.
What separates them
A vanity unit removes the need for a bathroom cabinet elsewhere, which matters where wall space is already committed to a mirror or shaver socket.
A pedestal basin sits proud of the wall by only a small amount, useful in a very narrow cloakroom where every 100mm counts.
Vanity units trap moisture around the waste if not ventilated internally, so the cupboard back should have some airflow rather than being sealed.

Questions we get asked
Does a vanity unit make a small room feel smaller?
A wall-hung vanity with visible floor beneath it usually reads lighter than a full pedestal, despite having more storage.
Can any basin become a vanity basin?
Only semi-recessed or countertop basins are designed to sit on a unit; a standard pedestal basin isn't built for that.
