Fitting and design

Choosing the right wall substrate before tiling

The detail that matters

Point 1

Old plaster rarely takes heavy large-format tile; overboarding with cement or foam backer gives a known, rated surface.

Point 2

Any deflection in a stud wall shows up as cracked grout, so noggins and fixing centres matter more than adhesive brand.

Questions to ask any fitter

Your questions answered

Can I tile over existing tiles?

Sometimes, if they are sound and flat, but it adds thickness and risks inheriting an old failure.

Is plasterboard acceptable in a shower?

Only with a proper tanking system over it; unprotected board in a shower will eventually fail.
